I think Rad Onc was at one point the most competitive specialty to apply for. Fast forward a few years. Anti-cancer biologics start getting approved and become mainline treatment.Self-reporting on SDN does have a bias toward more successful radiation oncology applicants compared with the objective NRMP data. However, if self-reporting increases, SDN may serve as a reasonably accurate source of information for future applicants. I think the general consensus is that rad onc is "so easy" by other specialties, and I know quite a few junior residents (myself included, a few years back) who had a hard time making the transition from call-based internships to the regular schedule plus massive studying that is expected in our field. God forbid you have a research project on the side …IMO, basically everyone who graduates medical school deserves 10-20 interviews, and deserves a spot in Residency. After all med school is literally designed so that graduates are all at or above the competency needed for any Residency position.
